For those of you who are just about to register or are considering changing membership classes, it's important to understand the differences between BPJS Kesehatan Class 1, 2, and 3 facilities. Currently, membership classes determine the monthly premium amount and the inpatient room facilities participants receive during hospitalization.
This article summarizes the differences in premiums, room facilities, and additional benefits to ensure you choose the right class and ensure you pay your premiums on time.
What is a BPJS Kesehatan Class?
BPJS Kesehatan membership classes are categories chosen by independent participants (non-PBI) based on their financial capabilities. BPJS Kesehatan membership classes refer to the levels each participant can choose based on their financial ability, and each class has a different monthly premium amount. However, these differences in premiums do not affect the medical services participants receive, as they remain the same, except for certain facilities such as inpatient rooms.

Differences in BPJS Kesehatan Class 1, 2, and 3 Contributions
This is the section most often sought by people before registering or changing classes. Here are the monthly contribution details for independent participants:
- Class 1: IDR 150.000 per person per month
- Class 2: IDR 100.000 per person per month
- Class 3: IDR 35.000 per person per month, with a government subsidy of IDR 7.000
To pay, participants can deposit their contributions at the nearest BPJS Kesehatan branch office, via the Mobile JKN app, or through mobile banking. For convenience and to avoid forgetting due dates, you can also pay your BPJS Kesehatan contributions through the Bebas app.

Differences in Inpatient Facilities for Each Class
Besides the premiums, the biggest difference between these three classes is the inpatient facilities provided when participants are hospitalized.
-
BPJS Kesehatan Class 1 Facilities
- Inpatient rooms with a capacity of 2–4 people per room
- Choice of specialist doctor
- Additional facilities such as TV, refrigerator, and air conditioning
-
BPJS Kesehatan Class 2 Facilities
- Inpatient rooms with a capacity of 3–5 people per room
- Choice of specialist doctor
- Additional facilities include air conditioning and TV
-
BPJS Kesehatan Class 3 Facilities
- Inpatient rooms with a capacity of 4–6 people per room
- General practitioner services, and specialist doctors if recommended directly by the hospital
Although room capacity vary, medical procedures are all equal. Every active BPJS Kesehatan participant is entitled to receive healthcare benefits at partner health facilities, from doctor consultations and supporting examinations such as laboratory and radiology services, national formulary drugs, ambulance care, and emergency services. This means that in terms of administrative services, medical procedures, and treatment, these three classes are the same and receive the same services.
If rooms are full, participants also have the option to upgrade their inpatient class. For example, Class 1 participants can still request to be moved to a VIP room as long as they are willing to pay an additional fee outside of BPJS Kesehatan coverage, as can Class 2 and 3 participants who wish to upgrade to a higher class.

Differences in Eyeglass Benefits
Another benefit provided by BPJS Kesehatan is a subsidy for purchasing glasses. The amount of this subsidy varies by membership class. Here are the details of the different benefits for BPJS Classes 1, 2, and 3:
- BPJS Kesehatan Class 1: IDR 330,000
- BPJS Kesehatan Class 2: IDR 220,000
- BPJS Kesehatan Class 3: IDR 165,000
Tips for Choosing the Right BPJS Kesehatan Class
For those of you who want to register or change BPJS Health classes, you can consider the following things;
-
Consider the contribution amount and your household budget
If you are an independent BPJS Kesehatan participant, choose a contribution that will not burden your household budget. Also consider the possibility of future contribution increases, so that BPJS contributions do not become too burdensome for your household budget.
-
Consider inpatient facilities
If you prioritize privacy and comfort during your hospitalization, class 1 with its smaller room capacity may be an option. If you don't mind sharing a room, class 2 or 3 may be an economical option.
-
Consider Additional Benefits
You also need to consider additional benefits such as glasses and non-formillary medications. If you need glasses, you can choose Class 1, which provides a larger subsidy for glasses; if not, you can choose a lower class.
-
Check the availability of healthcare facilities
You need to check the availability of hospitals and clinics near your residence. Make sure the healthcare facility you choose accepts the BPJS class you choose.
-
Consider previous experience
If you have previously used BPJS services, consider whether you were satisfied with the service you received. If you are dissatisfied, you can consider changing BPJS classes.
Whatever class you choose now, the most important thing is to keep your membership active by paying your premiums on time. You can do this easily through the Bebas app, anytime and anywhere, or by activating the auto-debit feature so that your BPJS Kesehatan payments are always on time.
